Justin York – Simdesk

“Del's leadership was instrumental in bringing agile methodologies to our development team. While transitioning to scrum, I often consulted with Del about how to handle things in the scrum framework. Once our team was fully running on scrum, I felt that we were at least twice as productive as we had been in the past.”

Matt Willson – Pervasive Software

“As Delmar's manager for over a year, I was very impressed with the simplicity of his designs, the quality of his software, and the tenacity he brought to problem solving, especially customer issues. Delmar provided strong leadership for the developers who worked under his tutelage.”

Steve Mook – Pervasive Software and Simdesk

"Del is experienced, enthusiastic and tenacious - an excellent team lead with expertise in UI design and development and Scrum project management. He is willing to learn new technologies, challenge assumptions, take risks, and be accountable for results. His skill and leadership would benefit any team that seeks to improve its ability to deliver value to customers and to the business."

Starting all over

By Delmar Hager

We are starting all over again. This is a time of new beginnings. I have joined a new team and this time I am not the Scrummaster. This is a switch for me. I believe this will be  a good role for the next 6 months. It will help me understand the technical challenges being faced by team members.

This team I am on is very new. I reminds me of 3 years ago when I first joined my current employer. Here is how they are new:

  1. New to the company. Most have only worked for the company 3 or less months.
  2. New to the process. Most have not worked with agile before.
  3. New to each other. Most did not know each other 3 months ago.

So this team must go through the forming, storming, norming and performing stages. It seems that every time I work with a new team that they think they are different and do not have to go through these phases. Now matter what they think they will progress through each of these stages.

Another observation is that the team is not good at planning for a two week sprint. They are overly optimistic and have committed to more work then they can get done. I know they are new and want to prove themselves but they do set themselves up for failure.
